A Space Opera in three movements written for voice, walkie talkie, megaphone and radio composed by Geneva Skeen and Mathew Timmons (radio score by Garrick Hogg, Andrew Lessman and Max Mayer). Employing a minimal modular score The Saffron Green brings together multiple analog technologies to explore the concept of both an outer space opera and an opera in space. Taking the structure of a space opera and bringing it to street level, The Saffron Green borrows liberally from sci-fi operatic soundscapes and matches it with protest chants from the "Arab Spring" revolts. The People Want to Topple, The People Want to Overthrow, The People Demand the Fall. The performance will extend throughout Chinatown, using Human Resources as a staging ground and as home base from 5:30-7:00 pm and culminating on, in and above Chung King Road performed by a group of roughly 30 people from 7:15-7:45 pm. You are invited to see The Saffron Green, the performance before the performance, the staging of the work as a work in and of itself at Human Resources from 5:30-7:00 pm as the performers ready themselves, get into costume, tune their radios, ready the walkie talkies and the bullhorns and warm up their voices. Then join us in walking over to Chung King Road for the performance from 7:15-7:45 pm for Perform Chinatown! on July 30.

AMANDA ACKERMAN lives in Los Angeles where she writes and teaches. She is co-editor of the press eohippus labs. She is also a member of UNFO (The Unauthorized Narrative Freedom Organization) and writes as part of SAM OR SAMANTHA YAMS. Her publications include three chapbooks: Sin is to Celebration (co-author, House Press), the recently-released The Seasons Cemented (Hex Presse), and the forthcoming I Fell in Love with a Monster Truck (Insert Press). Her work can also be found in the current edition of Little Red Leaves and The Encyclopedia Project: Volume F-K.

ANTHONY SEIDMAN is the author of the On Carbon-Dating Hunger (2000) and Where Thirsts Intersect (2006), both published by The Bitter Oleander Press. A selection of his work was included in the second volume of Corresponding Voices in 2005, by Syracuse University Press and Point of Contact, as well as in the anthology Barco A Vapor Transatlántico, published by Fondo de Cultura Económica and the Unversidad Nacional Autónoma de México. He has published translations of American poetry in La Jornada, Mexico City’s major newspaper, Castálida, Reverso, Luvina and Revista Solar, among others. His poetry has been published in such journals and newspapers as The Bloomsbury Review, Hunger, Ur-Vox, Borderlands: Texas Poetry Review, Beyond Baroque, Skidrow Penthouse, Milk, Nimrod, Parteaguas (Aguascalientes, Mexico), La Prensa (Managua, Nicaragua), La Reforma (Mexico) and Steau (Romania).

BRIAN KIM STEFANS‘ recent books include Kluge: A Meditation, and other works (Roof, 2007), What is Said to the Poet Concerning Flowers (Factory School, 2006), and Before Starting Over: Essays and Interviews (Salt Publishing, 2007). His digital works such as “The Dreamlife of Letters” and “Star Wars, One Letter at a Time” have been shown in gallery settings worldwide; many of these can be found at his website, www.arras.net. He is an Assistant Professor of English at UCLA, specializing in poetry and electronic writing.

A graduate of the CalArts MFA Writing program, JARED WOODLAND lives and punctuates calamities in Los Angeles.

SOPHIE SILLS‘ book of poetry Elemental Perceptions: A Panorama was recently released by BlazeVOX books. Her poetry has appeared in the Cricket Online Review, BlazeVOX, and Elimae. She works for a Jewish non-profit and at National University. She lives in Los Angeles and she is happy.

It is understood by this time that everything is the same except explanation and time, explanation and the time of the explanation and the time in the explanation.

Explanation as Composition* explores the ways in which texts—as narratives—operate within and around a gallery space. How does the narrative of an experience affect that experience, and how are narratives “curated”—publicly and privately. Explanation as Composition begins with a social writing event in which invited writer-participants will collaboratively create six narrative experiences of the gallery: story, geography, ekphrasis, provenance, nature, and confession. These narratives will be turned into audio tours of the current exhibition space; gallery visitors can choose which audio tour they would like to experience, complete with an accompanying brochure. The narratives will continue beyond the space of the gallery through a series of online texts, curated by U.N.F.O.: Unauthorized Narrative Freedom Organization, and published on the Les Figues Press blog.

*An inversion of Stein’s “Composition as Explanation.” Or as Stein says, “This makes the thing we are looking at very different and this makes what those who describe it make of it, it makes a composition, it confuses, it shows, it is, it looks, it likes it as it is, and this makes what is seen as it is seen.”

Using a combination of collaboratively written texts, appropriated stories and just plain writing, U.N.F.O. will create six audio tours for the gallery. Each tour will be on its own i-pod shuffle, and will be orchestrated, along with ambulatory directions, with the current exhibitions. Each audio tour will also have an accompanying brochure. The narrative strands will continue online as UNFO writers invite other writers to continue building these narratives. The online writing will be published on the Not Content and Les Figues blogs.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Harold Abramowitz is a writer and editor from Los Angeles. His recent publications include Not Blessed (Les Figues Press), House on a Hill, Part 3 (Slash Pine Press), and House on a Hill, Part 1 (Insert Press, Parrot Series #2). Harold co-edits the short-form literary press eohippus labs (www.eohippuslabs.com). He also writes and edits as part of the collaborative projects SAM OR SAMANTHA YAMS and UNFO.

Amanda Ackerman lives in Los Angeles where she writes and teaches. She is co-editor of the press eohippus labs. Sarah Shun-lien Bynum is the author of two novels, Ms. Hempel Chronicles, a finalist for the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award, and Madeleine Is Sleeping, a finalist for the 2004 National Book Award and winner of the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize. Her fiction has appeared in several magazines and anthologies, including the New Yorker, Tin House, the Georgia Review, and the Best American Short Stories 2004 and 2009. The recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award and an NEA Fellowship, she directs the MFA program in writing at the University of California, San Diego. She lives in Los Angeles and was recently named one of “20 Under 40” fiction writers by the New Yorker.

Teresa Carmody is a writer and co-founding director of Les Figues Press. Her works include Requiem (Les Figues), Eye Hole Adore (PS Books) and Your Spiritual Suit of Armor by Katherine Anne (Woodland Editions). The chapbook I Can Feel is forthcoming (Insert Press). Her work appeared in the 2009 &Now Awards: Best of Innovative Writing, and in several literary journals, including: Mandorla, Bombay Gin, Druken Boat, Luvina, emohippus greeting cards 1-4 and more. She was one of the organizers of the original Ladyfest in Olympia, Washington, and co-organizer of Feminaissance, a colloquium on women, experiments and writing at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

Kate Durbin is a Los Angeles-based writer and performance artist. She is the author of the poetry collections The Ravenous Audience (Akashic Books) and, with Amaranth Borsuk, Excess Exhibit, forthcoming from ZG Press. She has written several chapbooks including Fragments Found in a 1937 Aviator's Boot (Dancing Girl Press), FASHIONWHORE (Legacy Pictures), The Polished You, as part of Vanessa Place's Factory Series (oodpress, 2010), and Kept Women, forthcoming from Insert Press. She is founding editor of the journal Gaga Stigmata: Critical Writings and Art About Lady Gaga (www.gagajournal.blogspot.com). Come see live writers writing live! Explanation as Composition, an experiment in narrative, begins with a collaborative social writing event in which fifteen writers will use materials in and around LACE to create texts for audio tours of the LACE exhibition space.

Explanation as Composition is a project by U.N.F.O. (Unauthorized Narrative Freedom Organization), an unofficial and temporary coalition of five writers, including Amanda Ackerman, Harold Abramowitz, Kate Durbin, Sarah Shun-lien Bynum and Teresa Carmody.

Arne De Boever did his doctoral studies at Columbia University in New York and teaches American Studies in the School of Critical Studies and the MA Program in Aesthetics and Politics at the California Institute of the Arts. He has published articles on literature, film, and critical theory and is one of the editors of Parrhesia: A Journal of Critical Philosophy. His current research focuses on biopolitics and the novel.

Fallen Fruit investigates urban space, ideas of neighborhood and new forms of located citizenship and community, always using fruit in some form as their lens. The symbolic values of bounty and generosity in fruit are compounded by being cross-cultural, transhistorical and not class-bound. Fallen Fruit seeks to generate new rituals, events and formats to express the ideas of community, the public and what connects us. The aesthetic, kinetic and nomadic ways of the collaboration are formed by David Burns, Matias Viegener and Austin Young.

Carribean Fragoza is an interdisciplinary writer and visual artist living and working in Los Angeles and in her hometown, South El Monte. She is a graduate of UCLA and CalArts’ MFA Writing Program. She is currently working on several book projects, is founder of El Monte Arts Collective (aka, the El Monte Art Posse) and teaches writing at CalState University, Long Beach. She has published her work in publications such as Palabra Literary Magazine and Emohippus.

We name our series after this concept in hopes of the effects the series will have on attendee consciousness. Thaisa Frank is the author of two acclaimed short story anthologies SLEEPING IN VELVET and A BRIEF HISTORY OF CAMOUFLAGE. She also co-authored the nonfiction work FINDING YOUR WRITER'S VOICE, which is taught in MFA programs. Her new novel HEIDEGGER’S GLASSES centers around a secret Compound of Scribes, tasked by Third Reich officials to answer letters sent to the dead in the concentration camps. Exploring the fluid boundaries between recorded history and the life of the imagination, the novel reconstructs the landscape of Nazi Germany from an entirely original vantage point. A two-time Pen Award Winner and Pushcart nominee, Ms. Frank has taught writing at San Francisco State, UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley, and leads workshops and writing retreats nationwide.

Amanda Ackerman lives in Los Angeles where she writes and teaches. She is co-editor of the press eohippus labs. She is also a member of UNFO (The Unauthorized Narrative Freedom Organization) and writes as part of SAM OR SAMANTHA YAMS. Her publications include three chapbooks: Sin is to Celebration (co-author, House Press), the recently-released The Seasons Cemented (Hex Presse), and the forthcoming I Fell in Love with a Monster Truck (Insert Press). Her work can also be found in the current edition of Little Red Leaves and The Encyclopedia Project: Volume F-K.

Jon Cotner and Andy Fitch are the authors of Ten Walks/Two Talks (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2010). They recently completed another collaborative manuscript called Conversations over Stolen Food. Fitch’s Not Intelligent, but Smart: Rethinking Joe Brainard is forthcoming from Dalkey Archive. Cotner lives in Brooklyn, NY; Fitch, in Laramie, WY, where he’s an assistant professor in the University of Wyoming’s MFA program.

Scott Pinkmountain is a moderately unknown artist of various lite media whose work borders on the unreal in questionable and unverifiable ways. He currently lives either in Wyoming or Indonesia and is supposedly working on a novelization of the biography of the author of his biography.

Anna Joy Springer is trying to see if it's possible to turn a long bestiary of birds for Helene Cixous and a long list of punk women into a book-length rebus. She's also trying to see if it's possible to make an autobiographical comic about god, girlfriends, and moms. She works as a writing teacher in San Diego and she used to sing in bands. Her first novel The Vicious Red Relic, Love is forthcoming on Jaded Ibis Press.

Will Alexander is a poet, novelist, essayist, playwright, and visual artist. His latest book of poems, The Sri Lanken Loxodrome, was published by New Directions in 2009.

Dmitry Golynko was born in 1969 in Leningrad, USSR. He was guest professor for two years at Cheongju University (Slavic Department) in South Korea in 2004-5, and is currently Resident Researcher at Russian Institute of Arts History. He writes numerous essays on topics from the fields of contemporary art and literature, and is the author of many poetry collections, including Directory (2001), Concrete Doves (2003), and the English-language compilation of his poetic work to date, As It Turned Out (2008). Golynko has been nominated for the renowned Andrei-Bely-Award. He lives in St Petersburg.

Vanessa Place is a writer, lawyer, and co-director of Les Figues Press. Her most recent work is available in French by éditions è®e, as Exposé des Faits and in English by Blanc Press, as Statement of Facts.

Matvei Yankelevich’s books and chapbooks include Boris by the Sea (Octopus Books), The Present Work (Palm Press), and The Nature Poetry of Matvei Yankelevich (Knock-Off). His writing has appeared in Action Yes!, Boston Review, Big Bell, Damn the Caesars,Fence, Open City, Tantalum, Typo, Wobbling Roof, Zen Monster, and others. Mila Pesko has published an autobiography disguised as a children's book called, Little Mary of the Rose and the Giant Baked Bean. She is now in the process of developing a show and a movie about Patti Smith. Neither of which she will be disguising as a children's anything. She lives in Smoke Free, but not Mafia Free, Glendale with her flying cat, Sam.

A veteran actress of film, stage and television, Diane Sherry Case also has her Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. She has taught creative writing to incarcerated teens, private school girls, and adults. Both her fiction and non-fiction have been widely published in anthologies and journals, as well as adapted to film. Highlights of her life include meeting the Beatles, playing Lana Lang in Superman, and working as the strong man's assistant in a Mexican circus.

Andrea Lambert is the author of Jet Set Desolate (Future Fiction London) and Lorazepam and the Valley of Skin / 730910-2155 (valeveil press). She is in process of revising a punk novella called Scaffolding. Her work can be seen in 3:AM Magazine, Chronometry, and Lime Tea. She co-curates the Featherless reading series with Katie Jacobson. She lives in Los Angeles.

Michael Ned Holte is a writer and independent curator based in Los Angeles. He contributes regularly to Artforum International and his writing has also appeared in print periodicals such as Afterall, Domus, Frieze, Interview, Pin-Up, and X-Tra. He has provided texts for numerous monographs and exhibition catalogues including Richard Hawkins—Third Mind (Art Institute of Chicago/Yale), Steve Roden: when words become forms (Pomona College Museum of Art), Roy McMakin: When is a Chair Not a Chair (Skira/Rizzoli), and Ricky Swallow: The Bricoleur (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia). He has curated exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and Torino, Italy, most recently organizing the exhibition “Support Group” for Thomas Solomon Gallery @ Cottage Home, Los Angeles. Currently, he is faculty at the California Institute of the Arts.

George Porcari is a writer, filmmaker and photographer who moved to LA from Peru in 1963. He has also worked as the acquisitions librarian at Art Center College for more than 20 years and taught film history there for 10. Porcari’s photographs have been exhibited internationally, most recently with a solo show at China Art Objects in March 2010 and his writing has appeared in such places as Cine Action, NY Arts, Rain Taxi and Inflatable Magazine. In 2012, Semiotext(e) will publish a collection of his essays on photography.

Mary Woronov is the author of numerous books of fiction as well as the memoir Swimming Underground, which chronicles her time with Andy Warhol at the Factory. Her other books include the novels, Snake and Niagara as well as a short story collection, Blind Love, all published by Serpent Tail and the book Wake for the Angels that combines stories with her painting. She is also a frequent contributor to the magazine Artillery. Woronov has appeared in many films including Warhol’s Chelsea Girls, Rock ‘N’ Roll High School and Eating Raoul. A documentary about her, based on her book, Confessions of a Cult Queen, is soon to be released from Minx films.

Craig Santos Perez comes to the Southland to celebrate publication of his second book, titled from unincorporated territory [saina] (Omnidawn Publishing, 2010). Craig is a native Chamoru from the Pacific Island of Guahan (Guam), and has lived in California since 1995. He received his MFA in Poetry from the University of San Francisco and is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Comparative Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley. He is co-founder of Achiote Press; his first book, from unincorporated territory [hacha], was published in 2008 by Tinfiish Press.

Arturo Ernesto Romo-Santillano was born in Los Angeles, California in 1980. His artwork, mostly mixed media and installation works, has been exhibited internationally, most recently in the exhibition Holy Jolina, at Trpico de Nopal Gallery and Art-Space in Los Angeles. His subject matter is influenced by conspiracy theory and alchemical texts, junkyards, sprawl architecture, terrorism and entheogenics. An overarching theme in his work is fluency and its folly; he sees his artwork as a companion multiplier to an already baffling, origamaic world. His art-making is inspired by explorations on the streets of East Los Angeles, which feed into an ongoing series of fake radio shows called The Recent Rupture Radio Hour, created with writer Sesshu Foster.

Catherine Lamb and Laura Steenberge started experimenting with sound vibrations together about a year and a half ago. Cat plays viola and Laura plays contrabass. Using their stringed instruments and their voices, they are interested in exploring how sound vibrations interact with each other, with a particular focus on the overtone series. To do this they make up exercises, etudes, and compositions. They are co-founders of the Singing by Numbers women's choir.

SASHA STEENSEN is the author of A Magic Book and The Method, both from Fence Books. She co-edits Bonfire Press (http://coloradoreview.colostate.edu/bonfire.htm) and, along with Matthew Cooperman and Donald Revell, she edits the poetry for Colorado Review. She teaches creative writing, American literature, letterpress printing and bookmaking at Colorado State University.

JANE SPRAGUE is the author of the books The Port of Los Angeles and, with Tina Darragh and Diane Ward, *Belladonna Elders Series 8. She is also author of the chapbooks Apache Roadkill, Sacking the Henwife, Entropic Liberties (with Jonathan Skinner) and fuck your pastoral, among others. Her poems, essays, reviews and interviews have been published in numerous print and online magazines
including Columbia Poetry Review, Rain Taxi, How2, Jacket, ecopoetics, Tinfish, The Poetry Project Newsletter, Tarpaulin Sky, Hot Whiskey and others. Since 2004, she has edited and published the imprint Palm Press. She is an associate faculty member at Bard College's Institute for Writing and Thinking and its Workshop in Language and Thinking. She teaches writing at CSULB in Long Beach, California where she lives on an island with her family.

323 Projects is pleased to present our inaugural exhibition Mathew Timmons: The Archanoids. Timmons works in a variety of media, focusing on creating works using language, sound, poetry, and printed matter. His work culls from external sources and repositions meaning in unfamiliar and disarming ways.

This exhibition features the recordings from Timmons’ forthcoming album The Archanoids, which includes a variety of collaborative sound projects Timmons has developed with other artists since 2005. For a complete list of collaborators see below. Visitors to 323 Project’s unique exhibition space will be surprised to hear works that entertain but also challenge the very limits of comprehension, with poems, recorded performances, and experimental noise that address the breakdown of language, word play, and the parameters of communication.

Additionally, Timmons will use the 323 Projects space to invite callers to participate in a collective sound poem. This will involve callers leaving messages that will then be turned into a finished recording by the end of the exhibition on October 11.

Les Figues Press is an independent, nonprofit literary press, publisher of TrenchArt, an annual series of avant works (poetry, prose, drama, fiction, visual art) curated as an intertextual conversation. Les Figues favors projects which push the boundaries of genre, form and general acceptability.

Other Voices Books is an independent press that grew out of the longstanding magazine Other Voices (1984-2007) and is devoted to championing short story collections, novels in stories and themed anthologies. Other Voices Books also publishes The Morgan Street International Novel Series, focusing on fiction set outside the United States.

The WRITERS ------------------------------------------

Mathew Timmons is a writer, curator and critic in Los Angeles. His works include CREDIT (Blanc Press) and LIP SERVICE, a chapbook published by Slack Buddha Press. Forthcoming works include: The New Poetics (Les Figues Press), his micro-book collaboration with Marcus Civin, a particular vocabulary (P S Books), and a chapbook, Lip Music (By the Skin of Me Teeth). He also is the editor of Insert Press and co-curator of Late Night Snack (w/ Harold Abramowitz).

Davis Schneiderman's recent and forthcoming works include the novels Drain, Blank: a novel (Jaded Ibis), and The Exquisite Corpse: Chance and Collaboration in Surrealism’s Parlor Game (Nebraska). He is Director of Lake Forest College Press/&NOW Books, where he edits The &NOW AWARDS: The Best Innovative Writing series.

Gina Frangello is the author of the collection Slut Lullabies (Emergency Press) and the novel My Sister's Continent (Chiasmus.) She is also the Executive Editor of Other Voices Books and the fiction editor of The Nervous Breakdown.

Alexandra Chasin is the author of Kissed By, a collection of short fictions out with Fiction Collective 2. Her work has also been published in print in Hotel Amerika, Post Road, Denver Quarterly, Chain, and AGNI, among others, and online in Exquisite Corpse, DIAGRAM, and elimae. Chasin teaches Fiction Writing at Eugene Lang College, The New School, and currently serves as Co-chair of the Literary Studies department there.

Teresa Carmody is the author of Requiem (Les Figues Press, 2005), and two chapbooks: Eye Hole Adore (PS Books, 2008), and Your Spiritual Suit of Armor by Katherine Anne (Woodland Editions, 2009). She lives in Los Angeles and is co-director of Les Figues Press.

Harold Abramowitz is a writer and editor from Los Angeles. His book Not Blessed was very recently published by Les Figues Press. Harold co-edits the short-form literary press eohippus labs (www.eohippuslabs.com), and co-curates the intermittent experimental cabaret event series, Late Night Snack (www.latenightsnacks.blogspot.com).

Christine Wertheim is MFA Writing Program Chair at Cal Arts. She is the author of +|’me’S-pace (Les Figues Press), a book of poetics, and a chapbook from Triage. She co-edited the anthologies Seancé, Noulipo, and Feminaissance. Untitled is forthcoming. Recent critical work has appeared in X-tra, Cabinet and The Quick and the Dead, Walker Art Centre. Stephanie Young lives and works in Oakland. She edited the anthology Bay Poetics (Faux Press, 2006) and is currently at work on the collaborative website Deep Oakland. Her books of poetry are Picture Palace and Telling the Future Off.

Vanessa Place is a writer, a lawyer, and co-director of Les Figues Press. She is author of Dies: A Sentence (2006), La Medusa (2008), Notes on Conceptualisms, co-authored with Robert Fitterman (2009), and The Guilt Project: Rape, Morality and Law (2010). A book of conceptual poetry, Statement of Facts, will be published in France by éditions è®e, as Exposé des Faits; an English version is forthcoming from Blanc Press.

Maggie Nelson is most recently the author of three books of nonfiction: BLUETS (Wave Books, 2009), WOMEN, THE NEW YORK SCHOOL, AND OTHER TRUE ABSTRACTIONS (University of Iowa Press, 2007; winner of the Susanne M. Glasscock Award for Interdisciplinary Scholarship, and a Creative Capital/Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant), and THE RED PARTS: A MEMOIR (Free Press, 2007; named a Notable Book of the Year by the State of Michigan). She is also the author of several books of poetry, including JANE: A MURDER (Soft Skull Press, 2005; Finalist, the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for the Art of Memoir), SOMETHING BRIGHT, THEN HOLES (Soft Skull Press, 2005), THE LATEST WINTER (Hanging Loose Press, 2003) and SHINER (Hanging Loose, 2001). A book of cultural and art criticism titled THE ART OF CRUELTY is forthcoming from WW Norton. Since 2005, Nelson has taught on the BFA and MFA faculty of the School of Critical Studies at CalArts in Valencia, CA. She currently lives in Los Angeles.

Born in Watts and raised in South Los Angeles, “the fiery” Wanda Coleman has spent over forty years in America’s literary trenches, pioneering the Spoken Word scene in Southern California and becoming the first writer honored as a literary fellow by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (2003). Coleman’s many books include Bathwater Wine, winner of the 1999 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize—the first African-American woman to receive the award, and Mercurochrome (poems), bronze-medal finalist, National Book Awards 2001. Her honors include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Interviews and articles on Wanda Coleman recently appear in The Los Angeles Review, Burnside Review, Superstition Review and on the Poetry Foundation website. Her most recent book, Jazz and Twelve O’clock Tales, a collection of stories, is from Black Sparrow Books (David R. Godine, 2008). She currently teaches a writing workshop at Cal Arts.

Meiling Cheng teaches at School of Theatre, University of Southern California. She is currently working on her book manuscript about contemporary Chinese time-based art, for which she received the support of a 2006 Zumberge Individual Research Award and a 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship.

Teresa Carmody is the author of Requiem (Les Figues Press, 2005), and two chapbooks: Eye Hole Adore (PS Books, 2008), and Your Spiritual Suit of Armor by Katherine Anne (Woodland Editions, 2009). Other work has appeared or is forthcoming in various publications, including Bombay Gin, Fold Appropriate Text, Luvina, Sous Rature, American Book Review, emohippus greeting cards 1-4 and more. She was one of the organizers of the original Ladyfest in Olympia, Washington, and is cofounder and co-director (with Vanessa Place) of Les Figues Press.

JOEL LEWIS is the author of Learning From New Jersey (2007), Tasks Of The Youth Leagues (2006) , Vertical’s Currency (1999) and House Rent Boogie (1992). He edited Bluestones and Salt Hay, an anthology of contemporary NJ poets, as well as editing the Reality Prime, the selected poems of Walter Lowenfels and On The Level Everyday: the selected talks of Ted Berrigan. He has also written hundreds of articles, reviews, essays and profiles and currently is a staff writer at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. A social worker by day, he has taught creative writing at the Poetry Project, The Writer’s Voice and Rutgers University. And, for better or worse, he initiated the ill-fated New Jersey Poet Laureate position that was such a headache for Amiri Baraka. With his wife, film theorist Sandy Flitterman-Lewis, he resides in Hoboken.

SOPHIE SILLS recently relocated from San Francisco to Los Angeles after earning her MFA in Creative Writing at Mills College. Here, she writes poetry and literary criticism. She works for a Jewish Non-profit and teaches English at National University. She lives with her cat and she is happy.

BRANDON DOWNING is a photographer, collagist, filmmaker and poet. A longtime member of the Flarf Collective, his books include Lake Antiquity: Poems 1996-2008 (Fence, 2009), The Shirt Weapon (Germ Monographs, 2002), and Dark Brandon (Faux Press, 2005). A feature-length collection of his short films, Dark Brandon: Eternal Classics, was released on DVD in 2007, with a further installment expected in 2010. MACGREGOR CARD is a poet, translator and bibliographer living in Jackson Heights, NYC. His first collection, Duties of an English Foreign Secretary, is just out from Fence (December 2009). A new chapbook, The Archers, is forthcoming from Song Cave. With Andrew Maxwell he was co-editor of The Germ: A Journal of Poetic Research, from 1997-2005. Gabriela Jauregui is the author of Controlled Decay (Akashic Books/Black Goat Press, 2008). She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from UC Riverside and an MA in Comparative Literature from UC Irvine. Her translations, collaborations and critical and creative work have been published in journals and anthologies in the US, Mexico, and Europe, including in New American Writing, Mandorla, Lana Turner, Hayden's Ferry, The Aesthetics of Risk (JRP Ringier, 2008), Lenguaraz and Eje Central, amongst others. She is a member of the sur+ publishing collective in Mexico, where she recently anthologized and translated a collection of Tom Raworth’s poetry and also edits Revista Animal in Mexico City. Gabriela is a Ph.D. candidate in Comparative Literature at USC and a Soros Fellow. She lives and works in Los Angeles and Mexico City.

Janine Armin is New York editor of Joyland.ca and co-edited the fiction anthology Toronto Noir (Akashic, 2008). Her art and literary criticism appears in Bookforum, Artforum.com, Saatchi Online, The Globe and Mail, The Village Voice and The Architects’ Journal among others.

Kate Durbin is the author of a poetry collection, The Ravenous Audience (Black Goat/Akashic 2009), as well as a chapbook, Fragments Found in a 1937 Aviator's Boot (Dancing Girl Press 2009). Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in various journals and anthologies including Drunken Boat, Action Yes, diode, and elimae. She lives in Whittier, CA.

Mathew Timmons is a writer, editor, curator and critic in Los Angeles. He is General Director of General Projects, editor of Insert Press and co-curator of Late Night Snack (with Harold Abramowitz). A chapbook, Lip Service (Slack Buddha Press), and CREDIT (Blanc Press), an 800 page full color, large-format, hardbound book, were published recently. Forthcoming books include, The New Poetics (Les Figues Press), and his micro-book collaboration with Marcus Civin, a particular vocabulary (P S Books). Recent art writing may be found in Artweek, Artillery, The Magazine and X-TRA.

Stephanie Taylor is a sound and visual artist. She received her MFA from Art Center College of Design in 2000. Her work is represented by Galerie Christian Nagel, Germany. Her book, Chop Shop, was published by Les Figues Press in 2007.

Alan Bernheimer was born a New Yorker. Coastal inclination since. Europe before the age of reason. Graduated from Yale and worked with words at various jobs. High-tech marketing for a long spell. Now solar. Bay Area resident for 30 some years. Adventures in Poetry published The Spoonlight Institute last fall. Earlier books include Billionesque and Café Isotope, both from The Figures.

Mathew Timmons has published prose, poetry and criticism in various places including: P-Queue, Flim Forum, The Physical Poets, Or, eohippus labs, Area Sneaks, Artweek, Artillery, The Magazine, X-TRA and The Encyclopedia Project. A chapbook, Lip Service (Slack Buddha), and an 800 page full color, large-format, hardbound book, CREDIT (Blanc Press), was recently published. You are cordially invited to the book launch for valeveil's 1st duo in the poetic series entitled, Lorazepam and the Valley of Skin: Extrapolations on Los Angeles / 730910-2155. valeveil is an emergent small publishing press and Stockholm-based curatorial node devoted to strengthening connections between the United States and Scandinavia via ongoing ventures—a receptive tool for cultivating experimental design, critical writing and poetics. The 1st valeveil duo is part of an ongoing series to connect evolving poets and writers residing in the United States with those who either live, work or study in Scandinavia—with an original emphasis on English «» Swedish translation, hoping to expand. This 1st book in the series connects the American writer Andrea Lambert with artist Grant Watkins of Sweden. Both regions of the world harbor their own contradictions and paradoxes, yet there is untapped potential in uniting them.

Standing in for valeveil's editor j. s. davis, Harold Abramowitz will provide an introduction and read excerpts from 730910-2155. Andrea Lambert will read highlights from Lorazepam and the Valley of Skin: Extrapolations on Los Angeles. A reception follows—the REDCAT Lounge has a full-service bar, and copies of valeveil's 1st book will be available. Harold Abramowitz is a writer and editor from Los Angeles. Martha Ronk and Andrew Maxwell play the old modernist saw and tip back that sweet Tennessean jar for a weekend reading on classic ontological themes. Hypostatizers unite as Martha reads from her new collection about things, and Andrew reads from a few new chapbooks about ideas. Ponge would be piqued!

Martha Ronk is the author of eight books of poetry, most recently Vertigo, a National Poetry Series selection published by Coffee House 2008, and In a landscape of having to repeat, a PEN USA best poetry book winner 2005, Omnidawn Press. Her fiction, Glass Grapes and other stories was published by BOA Editions 2008. She is a 2007 NEA recipient and has had residencies at both Djerassi and MacDowell. She teaches both creative writing and Renaissance literature at Occidental College, Los Angeles.

Andrew Maxwell is co-director of the Poetic Research Bureau. He edited the occasional poetry journal The Germ, directed the Poetic Research reading series out of Dawson's Bookstore in central LA, and was a founding member of the online French-American translation collective Double Change. His aphorisms, poems, essays and translations have appeared in several American and French magazines including Jubilat, Fence, Triple Canopy, The Hat, Area Sneaks, Arsenal and Poésie.

artist’s statement:
One hundred seven stories high over Manhattan, a group of diners at the World Trade Center's skyscraping restaurant Windows on the World downed their digestifs, took a last glance at the stunning lightshow below, and crowded into a waiting down elevator. The doors slid shut. The elevator didn't budge. Someone stabbed irritably at the button. Nothing happened. Somebody got the doors open and the passengers free. "The elevator's out," one of them huffily informed the white-jacketed captain. The captain shrugged toward the nightscape outside, gone suddenly inky black. "So's New York," he replied. - from "Heart of Darkness," Newsweek, June 25, 1977

65 | 77 | 03 | - is a meditation on the blackouts which have occurred in New York City over the last forty years. From the relative social harmony of the mid sixties to the period of unrest and economic stagnation which followed in the next decade, each blackout unfolded in a different socio-economic context. Based on interviews and news accounts of each event, Liz Glynn will stage a series of vignettes exploring the social dynamics of a city gone dark.

artist’s bio:
Liz Glynn uses objects and actions to explore the ambition of empire and the pleasure of ruin. Her practice seeks to embody dynamic cycles of growth and decay by evidencing process, encouraging participation, and inciting future action. Her work has been presented at venues including the New Museum (NYC), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Machine Project, the REDCAT Lounge. Reviews of her work have appeared in the New York Times, New York Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Art Lies, Domus, and Archaeology Magazine. She received her MFA from California Institute of the Arts, and her BA from Harvard College.
